Falconry up close and personal

As some of you may know, we’re very animal friendly here at The Jungle and we have recently teamed up with Hawk Walks NI to add another awesome animal to our growing roster, the majestic Harris Hawk. These incredible birds of prey make for some mesmerising viewing.

Hawk Walks NI and The Jungle can now offer private groups the chance to come and experience the ancient art of falconry up close and personal. In particular, this will be with Harris Hawks. A private session can be booked for couples, families or groups of up to 10 people per session.

Our falconry expert will take you on a relaxing walk through the grounds and forests of The Jungle along with the impressive Harris Hawk, a striking bird of prey whose lineage has been traced back to the raptors of the tyrannosaurus age. You will be able to get up close to this illusive bird of prey and even get the chance to fly the Hawk to and from your gloved hand. Furthermore, you can get the chance to feed it and take pictures with it.

How it works

Our falconry expert from Hawk Walks NI will lead the informal group session, delving into the history and practice of falconry, showing you how to safely hold and fly the Hawk from your own hand, which will be protected by a specialised falconry glove. Everyone will get the opportunity to get gloved up and learn how to call the Hawk to have it land on their arm, a thrilling and exciting experience that will ignite your love for these feathered friends.

During the walk through our natural woodlands and open grass areas, the Hawk will fly alongside, in-between perching itself on trees, posts and just about anything else it can, as well as being called to fly directly onto the glove. This gives you the chance to keep a close eye on the Hawk and observe it in its natural habitat, as well as marvelling at the agility and accuracy of it’s flying ability. The Hawk will also perform precision manoeuvres which will excite and enthral the group.

• Sessions last 1 hour
• They are suitable for couples, families, groups of friends or youth and school groups.
• To enjoy a personal and worthwhile experience we have a maximum number of 10 people per session.

Additional Info

• The sessions are quite informal and everyone is encouraged to get involved. When you are safely equipped with the glove you are encouraged to practice calling and flying the hawk as much as you like. They are incredibly intelligent animals and make for excellent companions.
• Please wear suitable footwear (old trainers/walking boots/wellington boots) and dress for the weather.
• In extreme weather conditions, we may have to reschedule your session.
